 About Texas Tradition Band
The idea for TEXAS TRADITION BAND came about the middle of August, 1995. The actual "official" first gig for the band was *August 19th, at the VFW Post on Rhones Quarter Road, in Tyler, Texas.* Not saying it was a "perfect" gig... a few problems with maybe one or two of the pickers hired for that night..., but, nevertheless, it was the start of what has turned out to be nearly a decade of giggin' since that first "stumblin' start"!
Susan and I (Don and Sue Lummus), had been involved in other bands, mostly fronted by us, since first re-locating to East Texas from the hustle of Houston in August, 1977 (actual date was the day Elvis died). However, it became a real hassle to keep pickers satisfied, clubs and venues booked, (I know.. all the same old stuff that plagues musicians everywhere), and "Day Job" schedules juggled, so we decided to get out of the band business for a while in the mid 90's.
But, the music was still in us, and eventually it had to come out.. so, mostly to satisfy our own musical cravings, and also as a retaliation against all the "Garth Clones", we decided to give it another shot.
I had met Eddie Davis, Fiddler Extraordinaire, that Summer of '95, and had talked with him some about pickin'. Eddie had never played with a band.. only played Fiddle Contests.. but was willing to come have a practice session with Me, Sue, and a Bass Picker from a previous band of ours, Jack Daugherty. It was a true "happening".. we just seemed to click at the beginning, so.. the band was on its way. ( *See Footnote)
Not long after meeting and practicing with Eddie, I was visiting my favorite Music Fix place, Action Sound, in Liberty City, Texas, and spied a business card on the bulletin board from Lee Pettijohn, E.S.P. (Exceptional Steel Player). The card was sorta catchy.. a picture of a pedal steel, and Lee's name and phone number.. that was it. I grabbed all of his cards off the board, and almost immediately called him to come practice with us. Another true "Happening"! All involved pickers were amazed at the sound that came from that first practice session!
*(Footnote).. you might, or might not, have picked up on the fact there was no "original" drummer listed in all the talk about "the first band days"... the reason being.. right from the get-go.. drummers seemed to be one of our worst problems.. not so much the drummers themselves.. well, a few of 'em.. but the "irregularity" of their commitment time to the band! Of course, out of all the "several dozen" or so.. we have to say that two actually "stayed the course" for more than a couple of months. Those two being, Scott Wiens, (transplanted Canadian.. hard-core Country Drummer), and my "little" brother, J.W. "Dubby" Lummus. (dedicated, but hampered by "other stuff") Please don't ask me to name all the others... !
