Sue's Story
Although born in Houston, Sue grew up in Northeast Louisiana, in a little (I mean "Little") town named Athens, between Minden and Arcadia (Bigger cities, Shreveport and Ruston). Most of the family weekends were spent traveling to the neighbors' or kinfolks' houses for "Get-Together's", pickin', singin', and socializin'. Sue and her two sisters, Diana, and Mary Lynn, were singing 3 part harmony from the time they could talk, A love of music was instilled practically from birth, so singing just comes naturally for her. When she was around 6 or so, her parents bought a huge, upright grand piano (still sittin' in the old homeplace gathering dust) for Diana to take lessons. Sue would sit quietly by and listen as the lessons progressed, and would sneak in when no one was around to play what she had heard. After a while, it was decided that she should be included in the lessons as well. Her best teacher, however, was a family friend, "Mr. Virge", a very tall, gangly old man whose big hands could play at least a 4 octave scale on the piano. He played "by ear", but his "old Timey" Honky-Tonk style was easily picked up by little Sue. However, she hardly ever played except for the occasional encouragement of family, and sorta drifted off from playing for several years as she got older.
Shortly after graduation from dear old Athens High, Sue moved to Galveston, to live with a cousin and took a job training as an EKG Technician at Sealy Hospital there. Being 18 and free was basically all she did for a while. After a while, she moved in with her sister, Diana, in Houston, and while living with her, was where Fate really stepped in.. at least for my part!
I had been pickin' and singin' around Houston fairly steady after returning from the Army, and was doing my "extended sit-down" gig at the Esquire Ballroom (see My Bio) for about a year or so. How did Fate play here?.. I knew Diana from her frequent visits to the Esquire, and (according to Sue's story.. I wasn't really that interested) was trying to date her. (and man, am I glad I didn't.. but that's another story altogether). Anyway, Diana brought Sue to the Esquire a couple of times, I noticed them doing a clog to "Orange Blossom Special", checked with Diana to see exactly what Sue's situation guy-wise was, and to make a long story short (if that's possible by now), moved her in with me, and married her the day after my divorce from one of the "crazy women" I had been prone to fall for before!
Now..39 years later, here we are.. and that's basically the "Story of Sue"!
